Our Story
Music Heals Minds was founded in 2019, by Hannah Laham alongside Mary Belle Jones (Secretary/Treasurer) and Kelly Laham (Executive Dir.) after the passing of 22 year old friend, son, and musician, Julius “Cole” Rassin.
Cole's journey was marked by the dual burdens of talent and turmoil. Struggling with schizoaffective disorder, he sought solace in his music but tragically never found the therapeutic outlet he desperately needed following his diagnosis. His passing at just 22 years old left a huge void, but from that void, Music Heals Minds emerged.
Driven by the belief that no one should suffer in silence, Hannah and Cole's mother Mary, embarked on a mission to ensure that others like Cole could find healing through music. The organization's first act was to collect and distribute musical instruments to mental health facilities, offering a lifeline of hope to young adults facing similar struggles.
In the Wilmington NC area, where Cole's spirit lingered, Music Heals Minds became a beacon of compassion, donating hundreds of instruments to facilities striving to provide holistic care. But in 2020, a harsh silence fell as the pandemic shuttered facilities and halted donations. Yet, the melody of resilience never faded.
In 2022, as the world slowly reopened, Music Heals Minds found a new rhythm, expanding its reach to the vibrant city of Nashville, where Hannah now resided. Their goals extended beyond just providing instruments; they aimed to bridge the gap between music and therapy.
With big dreams, they envisioned grant funding to bring music therapists into facilities lacking these crucial services, ensuring that every note played would be accompanied by professional guidance and support. The story of Music Heals Minds is one of harmony rising from heartache, of melodies woven from memories, and of the enduring power of music to mend minds and hearts alike. As they continue their journey, they carry with them the timeless truth: that in every chord, there lies the promise of healing.
